Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U): Why Students Struggle & How to Help

Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U) is a key turning point in the Ontario math curriculum. It’s the bridge between applied math in Grade 10 and the more abstract, advanced concepts needed for university programs like engineering, business, and sciences.

If your child is struggling or wants to get ahead, here’s what you need to know to help them succeed!

What Is MCR3U?

MCR3U (Functions) is a university-level Grade 11 math course in Ontario. Students are introduced to:

  • Quadratic, exponential, and trigonometric functions

  • Function notation and transformations

  • Graphing and analyzing real-world problems

  • Trigonometry beyond SOH-CAH-TOA

  • Algebraic manipulation and solving equations

These concepts build directly into Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) which are required for many university programs. From my experience, grade 11 functions is an accurate depiction of how your child will do in grade 12 math courses.

Why Students Struggle With MCR3U

Many students hit a wall in MCR3U because:

  • The pace is fast — a big jump from Grade 10

  • Algebra must be strong — weak skills in factoring or equations make the course difficult

  • New concepts like transformations and trig identities are confusing without step-by-step support

  • Homework is dense, and many students don’t get enough feedback at school

5 Ways Parents Can Help

  1. Review Foundational Algebra

Ensure your child is confident with factoring, solving equations, and working with exponents.

  2. Encourage Daily Practice

Even 15–30 minutes of focused math daily helps more than cramming before tests.

  3. Use Real Resources

Ontario curriculum documents and practice worksheets are freely available online. Look for ones focused on MCR3U.

  4. Talk to Their Teacher

Don’t wait until report cards, ask early how your child is doing and what to focus on.

  5. Consider a Private Tutor

A good MCR3U tutor can help explain difficult concepts in plain language, give personalized practice, and keep your child accountable.
